The Winnipeg Goldeyes pounded out 18 hits in a 14-7 drubbing of the St. Paul Saints on Friday night at Shaw Park. For manager Rick Forney, the bats could not have boomed at a better time. Once again, the Goldeyes fell behind early, as the Saints scored four runs in the top of the first. But, Winnipegs bats just boomed, as the Fish put up at least a run in the first seven innings, including six runs in the seventh. Amos Ramon finished with four hits in six at-bats, with two runs batted in and two runs scored; Ryan Scoma had three hits a walk, two runs scored and an RBI; Josh Mazzola went two-for-three with a homer, two walks, two runs scored and an RBI; Mike Coles had two hits, a walk, three runs scored and an RBI; Fehlandt Lentini had two hits, a runs scored and an RBI; and Luis Alen had a single and a double, a walk, a run scored and three RBI. “Weve been longing for that,” Forney said with a smile. “That was a good night of offense for the club. “We gave up four in the first and if you have to give up four runs in an inning, its a good thing you do it in the first.” With the victory, the Goldeyes won their third straight game, took the series from St. Paul, improved to 24-21 and moved to within three games of first-place Fargo in the American Associations North Division. “Were beginning to get some big hits and produce some RBIs,” Forney said. “Amos (Ramon) had four hits, Mike (Coles) had a big night, (Ryan) Scomas hitting the ball well, (Fehlandt) Lentini had a couple of hits, Luis (Alen) knocked in three more runs. It was a good night for the guys. Im proud of the guys. Theyre working hard and staying positive.” After St. Paul took a 4-0 lead after the first half inning – Ole Sheldon hit a three-run homer for the Saints off starter Justin Garcia – the Fish started to chip away. Winnipeg put up a run in the bottom of the first, as Ramon drive home Coles with a single. Winnipeg added three runs on five hits in the second; got a solo homer from Mazzola in the third; picked up another run in the fourth; another in the fifth; one more in the sixth and then blew it open in the seventh. Leading 8-6, heading into the bottom half of seven, Nick Liles grounded out to lead it off, Coles walked, Ramon singled and then Ray Sadler lined out for the second out of the inning. But Haerther doubled in both Coles and Ramon, Mazzola walked, Lentini singled home Haerther, Scoma walked and then Luis Alen cleared the bases with a double. “The guys are having good at bats and good at bats are contagious,” Forney said. “The guys are playing with a lot of confidence. Theyve got some fight in ‘em right now.” Goldeyes starter Justin Garcia (5-1, 3.86 ERA) gave up six runs on nine hits over six complete innings, but he still got the win. Former Goldeyes lefty Aaron Correa (0-1, 19.29 ERA) started for St. Paul and took the loss. The Goldeyes will open a four-game series on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. against the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Ryan Sasaki (2-3, 5.16 ERA) will start for Winnipeg, while another former Goldeye, Billy Spottiswood (4-3, 4.52) will take the mound for Gary.
