Some interesting details have emerged regarding Sundays blockbuster trade between the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders involving forwards Thomas Vanek and Matt Moulson. As reported on Tuesday by TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie, Vaneks former team the Sabres will retain approximately $1.4 million - or roughly 20 per cent - of whats left of the $6.4 million he is still owed in the final year of his contract. TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun added Tuesday that if the 2014 first-round draft pick acquired by Buffalo in the deal ends up being a Top 10 selection in June, the Islanders would have the option to defer the pick to the 2015 draft. Another wrinkle in trade news from the weekend came up on Tuesday as TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported that Vanek was offered to the Toronto Maple Leafs three-to-four days ago, but there was no deal to be made. According to Dreger, the return that general manager Darcy Regier received from the Islanders for Vanek was something that the Maple Leafs - or other clubs - werent willing to pay. The Islanders acquired Vanek from the Sabres in exchange for Moulson, a first-round draft pick in 2014 and a 2015 second-round pick. Vanek - who is in the last year of a seven-year, $50 million contract - will become an unrestricted free agent after this season. Moulson - who scored twice in a 4-3 loss to Dallas on Monday - is also in the final year of his deal and speculation is that the Sabres could trade him again prior to the Mar. 5 deadline. Cody Martin Jersey Despite a lackluster record at the ScotiaBank Saddledome to start the season, the Calgary Flames put a three-year win streak on the line when they host the Arizona Coyotes Thursday. Calgary is opening a five-game stretch at home looking to improve on their 2-2-2 record. The Flames went 2-1-2 on their previous five-game homestand Oct. 21-31, and their six home contests this season are tied for the second-fewest in the league. Youve got to take advantage of the home games when you have them, forward Lance Bouma told the teams official website. Weve done a good job on the road so far. Weve just got to try to come in here tomorrow and have a big game. Jonas Hiller is expected to make his first start against the Coyotes in a Flames uniform. Previously a goaltender for Anaheim, Hiller is 9-0-1 with a 1.87 goals-against average in his last 10 matchups versus Arizona and has won six in a row. Calgary went 2-3-0 against the Coyotes in 2013-14. After faltering late in a pair of home games, the Coyotes are hoping for better luck on the road, where they have a modest win streak. Theyll attempt to snap a five-game skid in Calgary while earning a third consecutive road win for the first time in 13 months. Arizonas late struggles at home proved costly. The Coyotes (6-8-1) lost 1-0 to the New York Islanders on Saturday on a goal with 2:31 left and then blew a two-goal lead in a 4-3 loss Tuesday night to Dallas, allowing a short-handed, go-ahead goal with 1:16 to play. We know to be a ggood team that you have to win games like that.dddddddddddd Those are huge points, especially at home, defenseman Connor Murphy said. I think it helps that its a quick turnaround. ... Weve just got to stay with the right mindset and learn off of this, what we need to do to do better in Canada. The Coyotes head to Western Canada in search of their first three-game road win streak since Oct. 10-13, 2013, but their last win in Calgary was a 4-3 shootout victory Feb. 23, 2012. Phoenix has totaled 10 goals in its five straight road losses to the Flames and gone 1 for 17 on the power play. The Coyotes are 0 for 18 with a man advantage in their last four games after previously converting at a 25.6 percent rate (11 of 43) in the first 11. Were getting chances, opportunities. Its just not bouncing our way, forward Mikkel Boedker said. The Flames (9-6-2) have one of the leagues best power plays in their last six games, going 6 for 17 (35.3 percent), but struggled defensively for much of their five-game road trip. Calgary took the first two games before giving up 13 goals while dropping two of the final three. The Flames were outshot 26-15 in the final two periods of a 4-1 loss to Carolina on Monday. They capitalized on our turnovers and that was kind of the difference in the game, said forward David Jones, who scored the lone goal. Weve been away for a while but we should have had our legs tonight. We just came up short and well regroup and get ready for the next game. ' ' '
